A female sub-inspector of Assam Police, known for her involvement in various controversies, tragically lost her life in a car accident on Tuesday morning. Junmoni Rabha, widely recognized as ‘Lady Singham’ or ‘Dabang cop’ due to her resemblance to Hindi police movie characters, was driving alone in her personal vehicle and was not in uniform at the time of the collision.

The incident took place in Sarubhugia village under the jurisdiction of Jakhalabandha police station in the Kaliabor Sub-Division. As soon as authorities received information about the accident around 2:30 am, a police patrol team promptly arrived at the scene and transported Junmoni Rabha to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital pronounced her deceased. The police have apprehended the container truck involved in the collision, but the driver managed to flee the scene following the accident.

Nagaon Superintendent of Police, Leena Doley, arrived at the location in the morning to assess the situation. The police have expressed uncertainty about the reasons behind the sub-inspector’s solo journey in civilian clothing without any security measures, heading towards Upper Assam. Furthermore, her family members have stated that they were unaware of her plans and movements.

Junmoni Rabha held the position of in-charge at the Morikolong Police Outpost and was known for her strict approach towards criminals and alleged financial misconduct. In June of the previous year, she faced arrest on charges of corruption, allegedly colluding with her former partner. She was subsequently placed in judicial custody by a court in Majuli district, leading to her suspension from the police force. However, her suspension was lifted, and she returned to active duty.

In January 2022, she found herself embroiled in another controversy when a leaked phone conversation between her and BJP MLA Amiya Kumar Bhuyan from the Bihpuria constituency surfaced. The conversation depicted a heated argument arising from Junmoni Rabha’s arrest of several boatmen for operating country boats with what she deemed illegal modifications, as well as allegations of harassment by the boatmen towards the residents of Bhuyan’s constituency.

The leaked audio recording caused a significant outcry, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasizing the importance of showing due respect to elected representatives.
