Lovlina Borgohain, a 25-year-old wrestler from the village of Borpathar in Assam, has brought pride to her hometown after winning her first-ever World Championship gold medal on Sunday in New Delhi. Borgohain defeated Australia’s Caitlin Parker in a hard-fought 75kg final bout at KD Jadhav Indoor stadium, winning by split decision. Scenes of grand celebrations could be seen at her residence in Borpathar, with fans and supporters gathering to congratulate her family members.

After her victory, Borgohain’s father, Tiken Borgohain, expressed his happiness and pride in his daughter’s achievement. “We are happy that Lovlina won the gold medal in the World Championship. Her dream has been fulfilled today. As you see that people and her fans are coming to our house. Everybody is happy in our Village,” he said.

Borgohain’s fans from Assam’s Golaghat also shared their excitement after watching the match. “Lovlina has taken the lead in the first round, but in the second round, her opponent took the lead. In the third round, Lovlina came back in the game and defeated her opponent Caitlin Parker,” one fan said.

He took to Twitter to congratulate her and posted a video of her being announced as the winner. “We’re all so thrilled. My best wishes and blessings for your future endeavors,” he wrote.

Borgohain, who had previously won World Championship bronze in 2018 and 2019, put behind the disappointment of losing in the quarter-final stage of the Commonwealth Games last year to clinch the gold medal in New Delhi.
