Baryl Vanneihsangi: In a historic turn of events, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) emerged victorious in the Mizoram assembly elections, securing 27 out of 40 seats. The election results, released on Monday in December, marked a significant shift in the political landscape, as ZPM’s storm defeated the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) convincingly.

Baryl Vanneihsangi, a member of the ZPM, made history by securing victory with a margin of 1,414 votes from the Aizawl South – III constituency, becoming the youngest woman MLA in Mizoram.

Prior to entering politics, Vanneihsangi had a diverse career as a radio jockey and TV presenter, earning popularity among the people of the state, particularly the youth. With over 252,000 followers on Instagram, she utilized her platform to advocate for gender equality, a cause close to her heart.

In the aftermath of her groundbreaking win, the former TV presenter spoke passionately about gender equality and encouraged women to pursue their passions. In an interview with the news agency ANI, Vanneihsangi delivered a powerful message, stating, “I just want to tell all the women out there that our gender doesn’t stop us from doing anything that we like and wish to pursue. It doesn’t prevent us from taking up something that we are passionate about.”

Vanneihsangi’s victory underscores the changing dynamics in Mizoram’s political landscape and serves as an inspiration for women across communities and social strata. Regardless of background, she encourages women to fearlessly pursue their goals and aspirations.

The newly elected MLA holds a Masters in Arts (MA) from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong, showcasing her academic prowess alongside her political achievements. Notably, she had previously served as a corporator in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation, demonstrating a commitment to public service.
