Assam Tea Sets Records: In a remarkable feat, Assam tea has proven its prominence in the global market by achieving a staggering sales value of nearly Rs 2,300 crore during the fiscal year 2023-2024 at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC). Official data from GTAC reveals that approximately 115 million kg of tea were sold, marking an average price of Rs 198.51 per kg.

Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyer’s Association (GTABA), provided insights into this exceptional performance. Bihani highlighted that a special variety of tea, known as Golden Needle tea, set a new record by fetching an impressive Rs 61,000 per kg this year.

As the tea production season for the year draws to a close, Bihani commented on the industry’s overall performance, stating, “We have now reached the month of December, and the tea production season has almost ended this year. From April 1 to the first week of December, approximately 115 million kg of tea were sold at an average price of Rs 198.51 per kg. Last year, during the same period, we sold 114.50 million kg of tea at an average price of Rs 201.14 per kg.”

Despite a slight increase in the quantity of tea sold this year, Bihani acknowledged a marginal decline in the average price when compared to the previous year. However, he remained optimistic about the industry’s future, expressing hope for increased tea production in the coming days.

The tea industry in Assam has been a vital contributor to the region’s economy, providing employment opportunities and boosting the agricultural sector. The record-breaking sales at GTAC signify the global demand and appreciation for Assam tea, known for its rich flavor and distinctive characteristics.
