Solar subsidy assam: In a significant move towards promoting renewable energy adoption and alleviating energy costs for households, the Assam government has introduced a pioneering subsidy scheme for solar panel installation. This initiative, announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aims to bolster the uptake of solar energy across the state while offering substantial financial incentives to residents.
Under the ambit of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli’ scheme, the Central Government has already allocated substantial funding amounting to Rs 75,000 crore. This funding is designated for the installation of rooftop solar panels, coupled with the provision of free electricity up to 300 units every month for one crore households nationwide.
Chief Minister Sarma elaborated on the specifics of the scheme during a recent press conference in Guwahati. According to his announcement, the Assam government is augmenting the central subsidy with additional financial support. For households opting for solar panels of 1 KW capacity, an extra subsidy of Rs 15,000 will be provided, with amounts of Rs 30,000 and Rs 45,000 allocated for 2 KW and 3 KW systems respectively.
The chief highlight of this scheme lies in its tangible impact on the financial burden borne by homeowners. With the combined subsidies from both central and state governments, residents will only have to bear a nominal additional cost. Setting up a 1 KW system will now incur just Rs 5,000, while 2 KW and 3 KW systems will cost Rs 10,000 and Rs 27,000 respectively.
Furthermore, the scheme extends its benefits to Assam government employees and electricity board workers. These individuals will enjoy a 1% interest rate on bank loans for solar panel installations. Additionally, journalists registered with the Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) will receive an extra subsidy of Rs 5,000 for 1 KW solar panels.

Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the inclusivity of this initiative, stating that surplus electricity generated by households can be sold back to the government, fostering a culture of energy self-sufficiency and sustainability.
The impact of this scheme is already evident, with approximately 3,000 households in Assam already equipped with solar panels. This figure is expected to rise significantly with the implementation of the enhanced subsidy program.
By incentivizing solar energy adoption and easing financial barriers, the Assam government’s subsidy scheme marks a crucial step towards a greener, more energy-efficient future for the state. As renewable energy continues to gain traction globally, such initiatives serve as a testament to Assam’s commitment to environmental stewardship and economic empowerment through sustainable practices.
