J B College is not just a college , it is like a emotion to Jorhat.

How Jagannath Barooah College had started ?

In the year 1930, on 15 August a meeting was held in Chandra Kanta Bhawan discussing to start a new college in Jorhat. Khan Bahadur Karamat Ali was the president of that meeting.

In that meeting a committee was formed for the task including personalities like Debesar Sarma and Tulshinarayan Sarma.

Jagannnath Barooah’s grandson, Murulidhar Barooah proposed a land for the college and told about the dream of his grandfather to start a college in Jorhat.

And finally the college started on 19th August in the home of Jagannath Barooah, that is “Borpatro Kutir”.

At first the college was named as Upper Assam College. And later it was changed to Jorhat College. And finally in 1939 the name of the college changed to Jagannath Barooah College.

That is the history of beloved J B College.
