Flashback of Jorhat Races: Ramblings of a time gone by
Jorhat Races have been held from 1864 & continue to be held till date. The Jorhat Races were earlier held at Gormor mauza (behind present NID) from 1864 to 1885. The mile long oval race course built there is now a pitched road. The Jorhat Races were shifted to Chekonidhora, the present location in 1885.
High breed horses to the tea garden managers & owners competed in the Jorhat Races till 1947. Ponies have taken center stage from 1948 & jockeys from Jhajhimukh, Halwating & Mallow have been riding to fame on saddle less ponies from that time.
159 years is a long time to continue to run an organised sporting event.
The annual races which are normally held in the month of February were not held for a few years due to insurgency in Assam & covid.
